Thomas E. Mellon, Jr. is the founding partner of Mellon, Webster & Shelly, a law firm located in Doylestown in suburban Philadelphia.  Consistently selected as a “Super Lawyer” and “Preeminent Attorney” by national societies, the law firm has been repeatedly recognized as “prestigious” by the local media.  Both Mr. Mellon and Mellon, Webster & Shelly have been recognized as being of the highest caliber in ethics and professional performance.  Mr. Mellon received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Joseph’s University, 1969, in Philadelphia and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, 1972, in Washington, DC. In 1974, Mr. Mellon also earned a Master of Law degree from Harvard Law School and will be awarded a Master Degree of Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009.

Mr. Mellon, after completing a clerkship in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit with the Honorable William H. Hastie, was an instructor at Suffolk University School of Law where he taught two classes: “Legal Research and Analysis” and “The Art of Negotiations.”  Mr. Mellon spent seven years in the United States Attorney’s Office, United States Department of Justice, in Philadelphia where he quickly rose to the positions of Chief, Narcotics Unit and Chief, Criminal Division.  Mr. Mellon was honored as a recipient of The Outstanding United States Attorney Award from the Attorney General of the United States, 1980.  Similar honorariums were awarded Mr. Mellon by several federal agencies during his service in the Department of Justice.

Mr. Mellon, for almost thirty years, has been in private practice in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He has represented plaintiffs throughout the United States in federal and state courts. Mr. Mellon’s practice focuses on the representation of individuals involved in personal injury actions and complex commercial litigation.  He has achieved successful awards and settlements for clients in both class actions and individual suits.  In 1994, Mr. Mellon became a leader in the fight against American tobacco companies; he continues to litigate against tobacco companies in the State of Florida. In addition, Mr. Mellon has represented clients in suits against Fortune 500 companies including, but not limited to, automotive corporations, major pharmaceutical manufacturers, major medical corporations and institutions, banking and the oil industry.  Mr. Mellon is lead counsel among a national consortium of attorneys who have been retained by many 9/11 families to pursue an investigation into the involvement of Iran/al-Qa’eda which was prompted by the 9/11 Commission’s Report, July 2004.  Mr. Mellon has been selected by federal courts to participate in multi-district litigation committees and in one capacity is presently serving as National Liaison Counsel.  Mr. Mellon has lectured throughout the country before bar associations and universities.

Karen Rabenau | North Carolina Attorney

Karen Rabenau joined Twiggs, Beskind, Strickland & Rabenau, a North Carolina Trucking Accident Law Firm in 1992 after graduation from law school. She has an AV rating in Martindale-Hubbell—the highest rating available. Karen is recognized in Best Lawyers in America in two distinct areas: personal injury litigation and medical malpractice law.  For the past 16 years, she has focused her practice in these areas.

Karen has successfully tried civil cases to verdict in state and federal courts and before arbitration panels.  She recently finished serving for two years as chair of the Medico-Legal Liaison Committee for the North Carolina Bar Association.  Karen also speaks to physician groups across North Carolina about legal topics.
